The mission of the Asian American Journalists Association is four-fold:
• To provide a means of association and support among Asian American and Pacific Islander journalists.
• To provide encouragement, information, advice and scholarship assistance to Asian American and Pacific Islander students who aspire to professional journalism careers.
• To provide to the Asian American and Pacific Islander community an awareness of news media and an understanding of how to gain fair access.
• To research and point out when news media organizations stray from accuracy and fairness in the coverage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
AAJA Hawaiʻi is one of 20 chapters of the Asian American Journalists Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing excellence in journalism, supporting diverse voices in media, and fostering fair and accurate coverage of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.
AAJA Hawaiʻi will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2027. Our members work across broadcast, print, digital, public relations, marketing, higher education, government, and nonprofit organizations throughout Hawaiʻi. The chapter provides opportunities for networking, professional development, mentorship, and community engagement while supporting the next generation of journalists through scholarships, student outreach, and educational programs.
Throughout the year, AAJA Hawaiʻi hosts networking events, panel discussions, workshops, community service projects, and fundraising events that strengthen our local media community and support our mission.
