Primary Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for managing the monthly publication “Lāna‘i Today,” Lāna‘i’s only print newspaper. The role combines the responsibility of Managing Editor, Publisher and Lead Reporter.
As the Managing Editor, you will be responsible for working with a variety of contributing journalists and a series of amateur writers from the community to create a community newspaper. In time, this role could develop a connection with LHES students to assist in writing, photography and layout work. The Managing Editor will set editorial standards for the publication. As the Managing Editor, you will coordinate the layout and production work with outside vendors.
As the Lead Reporter, you will research and write articles that will serve to keep residents of Lāna‘i informed about important issues and developments in our community.

Essential Duties:
- Meet deadlines and consistently produce a high-quality monthly publication that reflects the Mission, Vision and Values of Pūlama Lāna‘i.
- Work with outside service providers on layout and publication of print copies of the monthly newspaper and handle logistics for shipping to Lana‘i.
- Work with third-party vendors to develop and maintain a website and online edition of the Lāna‘i Today monthly publication.
- Assist in Promoting advertising in the print and digital versions of the publication.
- Manage Lāna‘i High School interns, including selecting students for paid internships; organizing and giving assignments; and holding staff accountable for deadlines and quality.
- Develop editorial standards and create a publication that is a trusted, respected, unbiased and credible resource for facts and information about events and development activity on Lāna‘i.
- Cultivate freelance contributors to the publication. Preference given to Lāna‘i residents, but open to neighbor island and out-of-state contributors.

Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in English or journalism.
- Previous experience working for a print publication or digital media publication.
- Experience as a writer, editor or publisher is preferred.
- Ability to work with computer software related to publishing Lāna’i Today. Preference given to candidate with skill in coding language.
- Able to supervise other staff and contractors. Must be able to work with interns in an informative and supervisory manner.
- Must be able to work comfortably and professionally with consultants, freelance journalists, volunteers and the public.
- Requires working to established procedures and maintaining reliable monthly production of a print newspaper and digital newspaper.
- Ability to create effective working relationships with coworkers across all departments in Pūlama Lāna‘i.
- Must be able to work in a changing and dynamic environment while maintaining a positive attitude and work under pressure.
Required Work Cards/Certifications:
Must have current State of Hawaii driver’s license.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision and color vision.
Must be able to perform regular fieldwork consistent with the execution of the sustainable resources plan.
